As a study support mentor for a student with a disability, you have an important role. The role involves helping the student to plan and structure their studies. At the same time, you will gain valuable experience that is often of merit when you start looking for jobs after your studies.

The mentorship assignment

The mentorship assignment lasts for one semester and requires, on average, two hours per week. If you want to continue your assignment in the upcoming semester, you need to reapply.

The assignment is a paid position, which means that you receive a fee after the semester.

Please note that you need to have a Swedish personal identity number ('personnummer') to be able to start a mentorship assignment. You also need to be in Sweden to carry out the assignment.

The role of the study support mentor largely depends on the support needs of the student. Usually, it is a question of helping the student to structure, plan and organise their studies. It may also involve sorting and prioritising assignments and reading, setting intermediate goals and drawing up weekly plans. Sometimes, the study support mentor may also function as a sounding board and a discussion partner.

The study support mentor does not function as a supervisor or teacher and students are always to do their own study work.

In the Mentor Handbook, you can read more about the mentorship assignment and get tools that may be useful to you in your role as a study support mentor. Look at our information for current study support mentors too:

Skills and personal qualities

To start as a study support mentor, you should have been studying for a few semesters and have a well-functioning study situation of your own. We are also keen to see that you have the following qualifications/qualities:

  • Good ability to plan and structure work
  • Calm, secure and patient person
  • Experience of motivation and coaching
  • Awareness of how disabilities can affect a person’s study situation

It is often rewarding to be a study support mentor and it may be an additional qualification after graduation. Once you have completed your assignment, you can request a certificate from Disability Support Services.

Formal requirements

For tax reasons, you need to have a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) in order to take up an assignment as a study support mentor. As a study support mentor, you also need to be in Sweden to carry out the assignment.

You also need to be a citizen of an EU/EES country or have another legal right that means you can take the assignment as a note-taker at ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ.

If you have worked in more than one country during the year, we will need information from you about your certificate A1.

The fee per semester is SEK 4,800 before tax for those assignments which have covered an entire semester. In other cases, the fee is calculated according to the percentage of the semester which the assignment covered.

After a completed assignment, the payment of fees occurs within three months. This is provided if you have sent in the confirmations that Disability Support Services sent out during the semester.

For the fee to be paid directly into your bank account, you need to register your account with Swedbank.

If you do not have BankID (Sweden's most common e-ID) or have a foreign bank account, you can find more information on the University's internal website:
