GIS and Remote Sensing - Master Programme
Master's programme 路 2 years 路 120 credits

Description
Geomatics involves the acquisition, management and analysis of phenomena with a spatial reference. Within this field, Geographical Information Science and Remote Sensing are key tools to adopt in spatial analysis that finds applications in many areas, such as health, environment management, natural resources assessment, urban planning, geology, archaeology and agronomy.
This programme aims to provide you with knowledge in spatial analysis focusing mainly on environmental applications. Models and theories for understanding the Earth鈥檚 climate and ecosystems are integrated with knowledge on collecting environmental information, using remote sensing, storing the information in databases, and theories behind Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as well as Remote sensing using satellite data and aerial photographs.
Course content
In the programme, you study a number of obligatory courses; programming for applications in GIS and remote sensing (15 credits), Applied GIS (15 credits) and Satellite Remote Sensing (15 credits). In addition, you choose elective courses from our department, at least 30 credits from the following; Algorithms and data structures in GIS (7.5 credits), Web GIS (7,5 credits), Spatial Analysis (7.5 credits), Geographical Databases (7.5 credits), Geospatial artificial intelligence (7.5 credits), and Collection and Analysis of Geospatial 3D Data (7.5 credits). An elective courses to study to a specialization towards physical geography and ecosystem sciences can be Ecosystem modelling (15 credits), Global Ecosystem Dynamics (15 credits) or Climate change and its impact on the environment, or an Internship course of 15 credits. The programme ends with a Master鈥檚 degree project (30 credits).
Career prospects
Graduates from the programme will be able to work as GIS and environmental specialists in public and private sectors within areas such as environmental monitoring, urban planning and development, natural resources and sustainability. The programme is also suitable for students interested in research careers.
Computers in the programme
The programme requires that you have access to a computer, preferably a Windows laptop, on which you can install software mainly provided by the University, such as Microsoft 365, ArcGIS and development environments for Python, Matlab or other computational tools. On some courses you may need to buy or rent your own software.
Conditions in the study environment and during study visits and field studies
The programme contains compulsory elements that require you to be able to work independently and safely in a laboratory environment, in a hospital environment, in workshops, in production facilities, or during study visits and field studies. These elements require the ability to comply with safety regulations and instructions, and to move around in and evacuate premises safely. The elements also require the ability to monitor and control the processes studied.
