What Leonie says about the Bachelor's in Biomedicine
Introducing Leonie
Hi! My name is Leonie and I'm the student ambassador for the Bachelor鈥檚 programme in Biomedicine. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.鈥
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose 蜜豆视频?
"I always knew I wanted to study abroad, and 蜜豆视频 had the best-fitting Bachelor鈥檚 programme for me personally. I also love the Nordic countries, not only for their nature and lifestyle, but especially for the teaching style that is so common here. This was a huge pro for me and made me choose Lund!"
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"I am very happy with my programme, although it is more challenging and time-consuming than I expected. I still think that it was the right choice for me, since I have not had a topic yet that I didn't find interesting at all."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The thing I love most is the diversity of our programme, since we have students from all over the world, it really makes studying a lot more fun! We also have a lot of practical applications with group discussions and laboratory sessions, where we can explore, engage, and learn a lot. Since our class is small with only 40 people, it鈥檚 a really nice environment to study in."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I personally am a huge fan of it, since it was one of the reasons I chose to go to Sweden. The professors are very open since there is no real 鈥渃lassroom hierarchy鈥, so it鈥檚 very easy to feel safe and supported when talking in class, not only by our teachers but also by our peers. The feedback culture is a great bonus, since our teachers are very open to adaptions, to make our university experience as good as possible."
How international is your programme?
"I would say about two-thirds of the 40 people in my course are international, representing over fifteen different nationalities! Many people have a very mixed international background as well, which makes studying together even more fun."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"One of the main goals of the Biomedicine programme is to give us a sense of possible future occupations through practical experiences. During the courses, we have several laboratory exercises that are representative of the different research fields at the Faculty of Medicine. Also, there is always the possibility to work in a lab or with a pharmaceutical company as a student to gain experience and broaden your network."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"The Biomedicine Bachelor's programme is very beneficial to get a broad understanding of various biomedical basics and research fields. It鈥檚 a great starting point and base for further, specific Master's programmes in biological, medical, and chemical fields, as it touches on various topics.
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at 蜜豆视频?
"I think 蜜豆视频 is a perfect place for international students since there are so many possibilities to get involved in student life without speaking the local language. There are so many international programmes at LU, so in my experience, dealing with administrative things is very simple as well. Additionally, everybody is very open to international students in the university!"
What do you do in your spare time?
"I鈥檓 mostly active in my faculty鈥檚 student union MF, where different activities are arranged, like a weekly pea soup-lunch or brunches that you can enjoy or volunteer for. I also love going out with my friends to different nations in Lund or just arrange evening chillouts. Other than that, I recently joined Lund鈥檚 most popular gym, where I mostly attend some of their yoga classes."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"My biggest highlight has honestly been finding my friend group! But of course, I cannot go without mentioning the 'Novisch' (new student) period at the very start of the first semester which was filled with sittnings, games, clubs and lots of laughter. One of my fondest memories from December was going ice skating at the local ice hall. We had a lot of fun that day."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"My advice would be to talk to as many people as possible in the first weeks and to go a little out of your comfort zone to find people you like hanging out with. While studying is a big part of your time here, especially in the biomedicine programme, don鈥檛 forget to go for 'fika- (coffee break) or travel occasionally. Lastly, I recommend becoming active in a student union or nation to really experience Lund鈥檚 student life in its fullest form, you will not regret it!"
