What Carl says about the Master's in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science
Introducing Carl
Hi! My name is Carl and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose 蜜豆视频?
"I first came across 蜜豆视频 while conducting a literature review for my ecology paper during my postbaccalaureate studies. I was immediately drawn to its research programmes and the strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity 鈥 something that I deeply value. The university fosters an environment where different disciplines intersect, allowing for innovative and holistic approaches to sustainability challenges. Also, 蜜豆视频鈥檚 reputation as a leader in sustainability research and education made it an ideal place for me to pursue my studies."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
My programme delves into transdisciplinary topics related to environmental sustainability, which aligns perfectly with my academic and professional interests. Sustainability science is still evolving as a distinct discipline, but its strength lies in its applicability across various fields and the plurality of perspectives it encompasses.
So far, my experience has exceeded my expectations, especially in terms of the academic rigour and the collaborative learning environment that encourages critical thinking and problem-solving.
What is the best thing about your programme?
"One of the best aspects of my programme is its flexibility and interdisciplinarity. The course structure allows students to tailor their studies based on their individual interests and career goals independently and the course seminars (most especially actors involved in real-life sustainability challanges were really insightful and inspiring!
Another thing is the openness and approachability of our professors and lecturers. They always encourage discussions, welcome diverse viewpoints, and actively engage with students which I think makes learning more engaging.
Last but not least, the staff (especially our student coordinator, Amanda!) are very supportive especially when it comes to our administrative and learning needs, I was really impressed on how they respond effectively and provide assistance swiftly, making sure everyone in the programme is on the right track."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden emphasises openness, critical thinking, and collaboration. One of the things I appreciate the most is the informal yet highly effective communication between students and faculty. Also, time breaks between lectures (usually around 15 mins or more) or any other events are taken quite often into consideration which is very optimal for student learning.
Classes often have a discussion-based format, allowing students to express their thoughts freely while engaging with diverse perspectives. I really think this approach builds a sense of shared learning and encourages independent thinking, which I find incredibly valuable especially for someone who pursues a scientific career."
How international is your programme?
"Our programme is highly international, with students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. I think this diversity not only enhances our learning experience but also provides unique insights into sustainability challenges and solutions from different cultural and geographical contexts."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes! I continue to volunteer with two nonprofit organisations in the Philippines. One is a conservation organisation I鈥檝e been involved with since high school, and the other is a youth-led climate education project I co-founded nine years ago 鈥 both of which I remain actively engaged in today. Additionally, one of our programme鈥檚 courses, Knowledge to Action (K2A), provides hands-on experience by allowing us to collaborate with local sustainability actors. One particularly memorable engagement was with Lund Matvarukooperativ, an initiative that promotes sustainable agricultural practices and the circular economy by supporting local organic products from the greater Copenhagen area and the 厂办氓苍别 region in Sweden.
One of the best things about studying in Lund is the abundance of opportunities to engage with organisations aligned with your interests 鈥 you just need to take the initiative to reach out and participate!"
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"The best thing about our programme is its interdisciplinary nature and the space it provides for it. I think the whole programme is designed to provide necessary thinking tools and a comprehensive understanding considering the complexity of sustainability issues from around the world and by allowing students to specialise in areas they are passionate about. In addition, the international environment, practical learning opportunities, and strong connections to real-world sustainability actors and institutions make this programme a great choice for anyone eager to make an impact in the field of environmental studies and sustainability science."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at 蜜豆视频?
"I think being an international student at 蜜豆视频 is a unique, memorable, and enriching experience. The university is a very inclusive and welcoming environment where students from all over the world come together to learn and collaborate. While adjusting to a new country can have its challenges, the support systems in place 鈥 ranging from student organisations to university services 鈥 make the transition smoother.
The vibrant student life and culture, combined with Sweden鈥檚 high quality of life, also makes studying at Lund a very comforting and valuable experience!"
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my free time, I like exploring the landscapes of 厂办氓苍别, whether it's hiking in nature reserves or enjoying the coastline. I also enjoy hanging out with some of my roommates and friends through 'fika' (editors note: a Swedish traditional coffee break) or 'Merienda' (editors note: A Spanish traditional afternoon snack).
Being located nearby other big cities nearby such as Malm枚 and Copenhagen, Lund is a place for a vibrant cultural scene and also offers plenty of opportunities to attend concerts, exhibitions, and sustainability-related events.
I also stay engaged with my volunteer work and enjoy connecting with like-minded individuals passionate about learning cultures, languages, and sustainability."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"One of the biggest highlights has been experiencing the best of summer in the 厂办氓苍别 region and in Stockholm, and hanging out with my Swedish friends who I have met while studying in South Korea. I enjoyed the long daylight days, practicing Swedish through 鈥Hej hej鈥 or 鈥Tack鈥, the hotpot group dinners we make during winter, the beautiful nature, doing cold plunges, and outdoor activities.
I also enjoyed immersing myself in Scandinavian Christmas traditions which were a little different compared to how we celebrate Christmas in the Philippines. Nevertheless, it was a fulfilling experience to immerse myself with the locals."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Before applying, I鈥檇 advise to take the time to research your programme thoroughly. Look into the courses, learning outcomes, and research opportunities to ensure they align with your academic and career goals.
Also, always be open to new experiences! Lund offers a lot of opportunities beyond the classroom, from student organisations, conferences, to sustainability initiatives.
Finally, don鈥檛 hesitate to reach out to current students or alumni for insights and advice. 蜜豆视频 has a strong and supportive community that is always willing to help! Lycka till (Swedish for best of luck)!"
