What Afina says about the Master's in Service Management, Retailing and Consumption Management
Introducing Afina
Hi! My name is Afina and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Service Management, Retailing and Consumption Management. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ?
"I decided to attend ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ primarily because I am interested in the programme specialisation I am currently enrolled in. The university’s strong industry connections and advanced research centre in retail were also major influences in my decision. Additionally, the courses offered are highly relevant to current issues in retail as well as future developments in the field."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"So far, the programme has met my expectations, just as I had hoped before applying. There is a good balance between theory and practice, and students are encouraged to apply analytical thinking skills. Having previously worked in a retail company, studying retailing and consumption now allows me to reflect on my past experience, identify areas for improvement, and anticipate future trends in the industry."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The best thing about my programme is its strong collaboration with industries and companies. I enjoy most when the courses include study visits to companies or guest lectures from practitioners, which help me connect theories to real-world practices. On top of that, working in groups on case studies makes the learning experience even more exciting."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style here supports self-study, with teachers available whenever guidance is needed. We’re encouraged to develop critical and analytical thinking skills. I really value the learning environment in Sweden, where curiosity is fostered, and even the simplest questions are welcomed."
How international is your programme?
"The students in my programme specialisation come from various nationalities, and I enjoy working in a multicultural environment. In group work, our diverse cultural backgrounds allow us to share unique experiences and insights, which broaden our discussions of concepts and case studies. This diversity makes discussions more enriching and engaging."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Certainly! In the Service Logistics course, my group had the opportunity to collaborate with IKEA under the guidance of an IKEA representative. We analysed the assembly and disassembly processes and provided solutions. This experience gave me insight into Swedish working culture, teaching me how to analyse problems using course theories and then communicate solutions effectively through visualisation and presentations."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"Prospective students should consider this programme because it offers valuable opportunities for industry exposure. The programme is ideal for students with prior experience in retail, those looking to enter the retail industry, and those interested in research on retailing and consumption. Its structure allows students to connect theory with real-world applications, making it both practical and academically valuable."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ?
"I feel well-supported by the university as an international student. Although there are many cultural differences, the university provided orientation and guidance on handling challenges related to the weather, culture, and social interactions. Even within my programme, there is collaboration with a community in Helsingborg, offering Swedish conversation lessons to help us adapt to life here."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I enjoy walking in nature, something I rarely experienced back home in a big city. Here in Helsingborg, there is a nature reserve, a beach, and several beautiful parks. I love to stroll and simply be present in these natural spaces."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"One of the most memorable parts of my first year has been engaging with Swedish culture. I joined a choir to celebrate Sweden’s National Day and also took part in Midsommar festivities. These experiences have been incredibly valuable and unforgettable."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"My advice is to start by reading through the syllabus of the programme you are interested in, as this will help you understand what to expect in your studies. Take some time to explore the various resources ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ offers, such as career advice and workshops, so you can plan to use them to build both your soft and hard skills. Additionally, joining cultural activities offered by the university or local community is a great way to connect with others and adjust to the new culture."
