About the programme, courses and opportunities 

How did you choose this programme? 

"I am from Malmö, so I knew already about �۶���Ƶ. After high school, I was abroad and I always liked speaking English. I like the international perspective, so I knew when I applied for a Bachelor’s, no matter where in Sweden, I waned it to be in English. I’ve always leaned towards the social sciences. I wanted something that was towards political science, but still with a slight twist. I think it helps us to stand out - that we studied something different with a different experience."

How is the programme structured and what do you think of it so far? 

"I did like the structure the first year, it was basic but still challenging at times. It helps to provide a foundation for the coming years ahead, especially when the programme combines many students with various educational backgrounds. That's kind of the aim of the beginning courses. In the second year, when you are allowed to pick a major, I really liked those courses. Out of the four majors, I have gotten to know the faculty at the Department of Political Science which has been nice. I am staying in Lund for the spring, I have chosen my electives and it allows me to gain some interest in new areas."

What electives did you choose? 

"I chose one sociology course, the migration course. That was my number one choice for electives and I was very happy I got in. Then I chose another one called “Comparative Politics”. There is also another one on food, health and medicine, they are very diverse."

What’s the classroom environment like in your programme?  

"It really depends. We’ve had lots of seminars and that’s been very engaging. We have a lot of people who are active in different types of political and civil society organisations. There are lots of perspectives and everyone wants to hear from others and everyone often has something to say."

What type of practical experience opportunities do you have within BIDS (Bachelor’s in Development Studies)?   

"It's definitely possible to work during your studies in BIDS. If you are an international student, that might vary depending on your language skills. Time-wise, the programme schedule is flexible, allowing students to engage in what's going on in Lund. Lund also has a very diverse student life where you can get involved in student nations or political organisations, and that's a good stepping stone. In the third year, there is the possibility to do an internship in the programme. There are lots of opportunities, it's up to you to be active and take that first step!"

Thoughts on student life at Lund and tips for prospective students 

What do you think of student life in Lund?  

"I really like it! I’m from Malmö, so obviously I had been to Lund before becoming a student. If you are not a student you might not notice, but when you are here as a student you get access to many events and activities. Even though it's a small city, it's a big city for students because there is a lot to do."

Are you active in any student activities? 

"I helped to organise the BIDS orientation activity weeks this fall and that was fun and a bit hectic. It was really fun to meet all of the new students. I am a member of Västgöta Nation, and I have worked there a couple of times last year but I haven’t been an active member. I was admitted to the BIDS organisation so that's where I will be for the next year." 

What’s your general advice to prospective students that want to study BIDS? 

"I think it's a great programme for both those who don't know what they want to study exactly and for those who really know what they want to do. The programme can help guide you towards your existing interests and help those who are unsure find their interests too. The programme is an international environment. and provides students with the ability to concentrate on topics they are interested in. I’ve gotten to write essays on topics that I have found interesting and that has been very rewarding. So no matter what your profile is, you will get something very useful out of this programme."
