Description

Our research focuses on identifying the mechanisms behind kidney disease in order to develop new diagnostic methods and treatment for the approximately 10% of Sweden's population suffering from impaired renal function. We are also researching new methods to improve treatment with peritoneal dialysis - a form of dialysis treatment for patients with severe renal failure. We collaborate with other research groups - both internationally and in Sweden. Renal physiology is the study of how the kidney works. The kidneys' function is to cleanse the body of toxins and waste products from metabolism and, with great precision, regulate the amount of salts and water in the body. The kidneys also activates vitamin D, manages the calcium balance, produce hormones, regulates blood pressure and maintain the acid-base balance. The precise mechanisms underlying many renal diseases is unknown. Our focus is therefore on basic research - understanding how the kidney works - both in sickness and in health.
