Description

The metabolic disorders and liver disease laboratory is headed by Philipp Kaldis, who is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences and a vice-coordinator of the ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Diabetes Centre (LUDC). Recent data suggests that up to 30% of the population suffers from liver diseases including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can further develop to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). My laboratory focuses on the liver, liver regeneration, liver cancer, and metabolism. We study changes in metabolism, especially in the context of NAFLD and diabetes. We use cell biology, genetics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and genomics to determine the mechanisms causing these diseases. These large dataset allow us to identify pathways that are deregulated. Strong emphasis is placed on investigations of the mechanistic basis of liver disease to identify new therapeutic targets as well as biomarkers.
