What Maya says about the Bachelor’s in Economy and Society
Introducing Maya
Hi! My name is Maya and I'm the student ambassador for the Bachelor’s programme in Economy and Society. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ?
"ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ caught my attention because of its worldwide reputation, diversity of programmes, and historical heritage. Once I started reading about my programme, I knew it would be a perfect fit for me."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"I like my programme so far. I had some expectations, but it has surpassed them in the best possible way. I like the combinations of both data and historical overview. For example, the attempts to explain seemingly simple economic concepts, only to reveal the numerous underlying factors that can distort or reshape our understanding."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The number of sources we have access to is the best thing. At first, it might sound a bit overwhelming, but in reality, it gives the best possible picture of a concept or historical event. Moreover, the professors play a crucial role here by guiding students through the material and helping them explore topics in depth."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I think it is truly impressive. When the lecture starts, it is easy to notice how professors put a lot of effort to teach students. I especially like how they are interested in helping students to understand the concepts and events by answering questions or suggesting useful additional sources. At the same time, there is a strong emphasis on critical thinking, which is essential for both academic and real-life decision-making."
How international is your programme?
"It is very international. We come from different countries, but at the same time, we share many similarities. We exchange perspectives, learn from each other, and bring diverse experiences to discussions."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"The first year is mainly about building a foundation to understand the past and recognise patterns that shaped where we are now. While it's mostly theoretical, the programme also encourages us to connect this knowledge to real-world examples, preparing us for practical applications later on."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If they are interested in both history and economics, this programme is a great choice. It offers a strong historical foundation that helps explain global patterns, such as why some countries became wealthier than others or how the world became more interconnected. The programme also emphasises the importance of theoretical knowledge in economics, which is essential for understanding the driving forces behind historical and economic developments."
Thoughts on spare time and tips for prospective students
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I enjoy going to cafés, attending student events, taking walks outdoors, watching my favorite TV series, and reading books of various genres."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"The highlights of my first year in Lund have been getting closer to people from different cultures and learning new things, both academically and personally."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Don’t be afraid to take risks. If you want to succeed, every small step can bring you closer to your goals. And, of course, try to prioritise yourself and set your goals accordingly. Don’t be too hard on yourself — you deserve everything."
