What Elise says about the Master's in Global Development, Population and Economic Change
Introducing Elise
Hi! My name is Elise and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Global Development, Population and Economic Change. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
The programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ?
"ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ has a strong international reputation, especially in my field of study. I was drawn to the mix of high academic standards, research opportunities, and the focus on real-world issues. Plus, the student life here is amazing – there’s always something happening, and the campus has a great atmosphere."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"My programme has been both intellectually stimulating and practically relevant. I expected it to be academically solid, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how interactive and engaging the courses are. The discussions, group work, and case studies make everything feel more relevant, and the professors are super approachable. Overall, it’s definitely meeting (and even exceeding) my expectations!"
What is the best thing about your programme?
"One of the best aspects is the strong link between theory and practice. The discussions are always interesting, especially since the students come from such diverse backgrounds, and the professors really encourage critical thinking. Also, there are lots of opportunities to work on projects that connect to real issues, which makes learning feel more meaningful."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I really like the teaching style in Sweden! It’s super student-focused, meaning there is a lot of emphasis on discussions, critical thinking, and independent work rather than just memorising facts. Professors are really approachable, and the classroom atmosphere is pretty informal, you are encouraged to ask questions and challenge ideas. There is also a big focus on group work, which is great for learning from different perspectives. Overall, it feels like they really want you to understand the material, not just pass exams."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is super international! There are students from all over the world."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes! There is a strong focus on applying what we learn to real-world situations. We work on case studies, group projects, and research that connect directly to current issues. Some courses also bring in guest speakers, which gives great insight into practical applications. Plus, there are opportunities for internships, so we do get to see how it works outside of the academic setting."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If you're looking for a programme that combines solid academic theory with real-world application, this is a great choice. The courses are engaging, the professors are super approachable, and the international environment makes discussions really dynamic. There’s also a lot of flexibility to tailor your studies to your interests, whether through research projects, electives, or internships. Also, Lund has an amazing student life, so you’re getting both a great education and a fun experience at the same time!"
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ?
"Being an international student at ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ has been a good experience. There’s a strong support system, and it’s easy to meet people through student nations, events, and group work. The international environment makes it easy to adjust, and the university provides a lot of resources for students. Lund is also a very student-friendly city, so day-to-day life is quite manageable."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I like to explore Lund and the surrounding areas. There are lots of nice cafés, and the city has a good mix of student events, cultural activities, and nature spots. I also spend time with friends, whether it's just hanging out, going to a student nation event, or taking a trip to Copenhagen since it's so close. When the weather is good, biking around or going for a walk in the parks is a nice way to unwind."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"Some of the highlights have been getting to know people from all over the world, and exploring the student life in Lund. Academically, some courses have been really engaging, especially the ones that include discussions and real-world applications."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"If you’re considering coming to Lund, my advice would be to keep an open mind and take advantage of everything the university and the city have to offer. The academic style is quite independent, so being proactive with your studies helps. At the same time, student life is a big part of the experience, so getting involved in student nations or other activities is a great way to meet people."
