What Siddhay says about the Master's in Production and Materials Engineering
Introducing Siddhay
Hi! My name is Siddhay, and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Production and Materials Engineering. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose this programme?
"In terms of engineering, the Swedish industry is very strong. I chose the Production and Materials Engineering programme because I would like to find solutions to the critical problems that we are facing in industries. As engineers, we all need to accept these challenges and try to resolve them. I believe that my programme has a great balance between the selected courses in the curriculum. This programme has a great amalgamation of materials, manufacturing, production developments, and understanding of supply chain and sustainability aspects, covering both within Sweden as well as in international markets".
What is the best thing about your programme?
"My favourite aspect of my programme is the variety of courses available and the flexibility. It is also very interactive with the industry, meaning we have a lot of study visits and guest lectures as well. Afterwards, we can always reach out to them by ourselves or with help of the professors. I have completed only my first semester and I’m already able to understand how I want to proceed further for upcoming semesters regarding thesis work and job applications."

What do you think of the teaching style at Lund?
"Collaboration is the first word that comes to mind. There is no sense of a competitive environment at all. It’s all about growing and learning together. The professors also try to make us understand our strengths during the course. Our projects are done in groups, which is important as we learn from people from different backgrounds and perspectives.
Here, we also call our professors by their first names. It creates a more direct relationship with them. They are open to suggestions, such as a meeting regarding course evaluation, so that professors can make improvements within the course for the upcoming students."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"The programme has a great balance between courses regarding materials, manufacturing, operational and working environments in industries. So, if you are interested in learning about production developments and materials technology in a comprehensive manner – from the sustainability aspect to how exactly the industries are working – then this is the place to be. "
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"I recently got a Teaching Assistantship in the department under the guidance of one of my course professors. For my programme, we don’t have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester, but it could be possible to go abroad while doing your thesis work. For most of the options for practical work, we need to find ourselves by reaching out to different industries (which is where the guest visits come in handy). Recently, we also had the career event at the Faculty of Engineering, which is Scandinavia’s largest career fair. It is a great opportunity to talk with a lot of companies across Sweden to find out about summer jobs, internships and Master’s thesis project ideas."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund and tips for prospective students
How international is your programme?
"We have around 15-16 people in my Master’s programme with diverse student backgrounds. But usually, our classes have around 40 students, consisting of other exchange and Bachelor’s students as well. I’d say it is about 60% Swedish students and 40% international. I heard before arriving that Swedes are very reserved, but my classmates who are from Sweden are really friendly. They try to understand our opinion and perspective if we are in some kind of discussion."
What it is like to be an international student at ۶Ƶ?
"It’s not always easy to start an entirely new phase of life by migrating to a new country. But I believe that when things are not that easy, only then one can grow in life. ۶Ƶ gives the opportunity to get involved in its fantastic student life through activities involving hikes, student nations, "sittnings" (student dinners), cultural activities, etc."
Do you have any advice for other students who are considering coming to Lund?
"Sweden has a great living standard, gender equality and a high level of education, which makes it a great place to live. I recommend finding some activities to keep yourself busy during the winter so that the darkness won’t affect your productive mindset. For example, you can easily travel to Malmö, Helsingborg, or Copenhagen to enjoy beautiful nature and gain more understanding of the surroundings."
