What Giacomo says about the Master's in Production and Materials Engineering
Giacomo from Italy
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated in June 2023."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"I work as a Project Manager within Logistic Development at Scania Oskarshamn."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
I found the job at the company’s website. I applied in January 2023 and signed the contract in May 2023, so I actually had a contract before completing the Master's programme.
Favorite thing about your job?
"Having started with a 6 months graduate programme, I had the opportunity to visit several production sites and build an international network within the company. What excites me the most is leading a project group and interacting with stakeholders (suppliers, management, production, etc)."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"Projects are the vehicle of change; I have the opportunity to influence what technologies we chose to use and how we introduce them in our existing production environment. This means I can prioritise sustainable choices and make small changes with an impact that matters."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"The programme has taught me the importance of the balance between analytical skills and soft skills. As engineers we might tend to over-focus on the numbers and forget the importance of communicating our ideas in an effective and understandable way. This is especially valuable when interacting with a diverse and international group of people, something we have greatly exercised during the programme. It also provided me with good overall knowledge about the Swedish manufacturing industry and technical knowledge that has been proven very useful right away. The programme has a good reputation in the industry."
What do you miss most from your time at ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ/The Faculty of Engineering (LTH)? What were the highlights of your time at Lund?
"A very good balance between studies, social life, and development opportunities. Lund is a great student town, very close to Copenhagen and at the same time to Swedish nature. Small but very well connected and a great place to take a Master's programme before starting a technical professional career."
How international was your programme?
"Extremely international both in terms of participants (more than 10 nationalities if I remember correctly), but also the scope and perspective that was adopted in the different course modules. The faculty is also quite international, and I can confidently say that professors bring quite a diverse set of backgrounds and perspectives to the programme."
What was the focus of your thesis?
"I conducted my thesis at a manufacturing company in the region. The focus was on machining of cast iron components for the automotive industry. Specifically, we looked into how we could optimise cycle time and reduce scrap rate, and how this translates into more margin for the company and less impact on the environment."
Why do you think prospective students should choose this programme?
"To develop into highly competent engineers with close connection to the Swedish industry. This programme has provided me with a very valuable set of skills that, building onto what I have learned during my previous studies, enables me to apply theoretical knowledge to my daily work."
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"There is countless opportunities that are waiting for you in Lund; don’t be afraid to get involved (with extra courses, one of the many societies, student organisations, labs,… the list goes on) and make the most out of your time as a student."
