What Matheus says about the Master's in Production and Materials Engineering
Matheus from Brazil
What year did you graduate and what is your current job?
"I graduated in 2023, and I currently work as a Subsea Engineer in 2h Offshore in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
"While I was writing my thesis, I took part in many selection processes, so I already had a job offer at the end of my Master's. After graduating, I worked as a subsea engineer in an EPCI company in Portugal in a temporary position. Near the end of the contract, my family company needed me so I moved back to work in the development of a logistic pier/wharf for small barges. While I was working here, a friend of mine told me about the position as a subsea engineer, I applied and now I am trying to manage to do both things."
What is your Favourite thing about your job?
"My favourite part of my job is to work on multiple projects, not being stuck in one kind of activity."
Do you feel like you contributing to changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"I am doing my part to make energy and logistics cheaper in the world and improve the overall quality of life."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"In technical terms, I would say the knowledge I got in the CAD and FEA software was the most important for the jobs I got after graduating, but I would say that the most important lesson I learned that I use is how to deal with different cultures. In all the companies I worked in, I had to deal with different colleagues or clients from different backgrounds and cultures. The social skills I developed during the Master's to work in diverse teams have helped me a lot."
What do you miss most from your time at Lund? What were the highlights?
"I miss the friends I made, the Champions League nights that I would watch with my corridor mates, the jokes and stories being told before classes and all the fun."
How international was your programme?
"There were like four Swedes but most of my classmates came from other countries. There were 14 students from places like India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Australia, Italy, Croatia, and Belgium."
What was the focus of your thesis?
"My thesis was 'Strain/Stress profile investigation of crystals mounted in an optical instrument via FEM simulation', I modelled the photo-elastic behaviour of some crystals in Abaqus (FEA software). The main focus was to develop a way to predict the change in the refraction in crystal lenses used in laser resonators and obtain better precision using them."
Why do you think prospective students should choose this programme?
"Most of my colleagues managed to get a job after graduation – this would be the first indication that it is worth spending your time in the programme. The infrastructure of the labs and partnership with some international facilities in the area are also great aspects of going to Lund.
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"The courses in Lund were quite easy for me to pass but they were time-consuming. There is a great need to discipline yourself and to adapt to studying and working a lot. If you do what the teachers ask you to do, you are going to succeed."
